Man of Steel

Superman Nr. 1 (1938)

My dad, a man of steel. Hit by a car twice as a kid; stabbed as a teen by would-be hooligans; has lived with hemophilia his whole life; as an adult nearly bled to death and then would later find out he had hepatitis from the tainted blood transfusions; survived cancer in his 60's; and just last Friday he fell down a cement stair well of a commercial building with hardly a scratch to show for it.

His doctors are astounded. They are thinking, 'maybe this man is a cat'? They ask him, "Ted, what's your secret?" and he replies, the same every time, "I smoke cigars!"

My dad is turning 85 on Superbowl Sunday. People who meet this man of steel usually think he's a guy, 65, maybe 70 years old. He is sprite, alert, active. I recently asked him, "So, Dad, what's your secret?" and he said, quite seriously, "Well, I've smoked cigars for the past 70 years, I enjoy a good cigar."

Thanks Dad, and Happy 85Th, you are an inspiration!

The Man of Steel also provides his daughters with their own personal roadside service whenever their cars break down. Step aside AAA-- it's a bird, it's a plane, no... it's Ted.

(And the man of steel wants raspberry cheesecake for his birthday cake.)
